What’s in a name?

It’s becoming a feeding frenzy with all the iphone and tablet related rumors popping up.  The latest is about the name of the upcoming tablet device from Apple.  Personally I think it is horrible.  Macrumors is running a story about the name iPad being trademark registered recently around the world.

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/19/will-apples-tablet-actually-be-called-the-ipad-new-trademarks-filed-this-week/

It also makes note of the fact that Fujitsu own all the “slate” related trademarks for computing devices in the USA.  Not that that matters as Apple usurped iPhone from Cisco.  Anyway, the reason I think iPad is horrible is it sound way to much like iPod and that will create confusion.  Apple doesn’t like confusion.  I’d vote for Mac Pad before iPad and even that could be mispronounce/heard as Mac Pod.  Pad/Pod are too similar sounding and spelled.  Mac Tablet is better, but this device isn’t really a Mac, it’s more closely related to the iPhone and iPod Touch.  So, I believe Apple with stick with the “i” themed names for this device and my vote, seeing as the name of this site is iSlate.org, is for the name iSlate.

unfortunately, iTab has already been used for a older product.

iSlate seems to be the most likely, at least it is what the majority of rumours seem to suggest it will be. The ‘is late’ connotations do make it look like iSlate may just be a pre-release code name or something, but I like it, and I hope it is what the tablet will actually be called.

I think the strongest indication that Apple’s new device will be called an iSlate is that fact that islate.com does not exist.

More importantly, the registrar for the domain apple.com is MarkMonitor.com (http://whois.domaintools.com/apple.com).

When you view the whois information for islate.com you’ll note the registrar is also MarkMonitor.com (http://whois.domaintools.com/islate.com).

I think this is too strong of evidence to ignore.

What about “MacBook Touch”

I think they should call it the iPad

Also iBook has been retired though it seems like book reading is just the tip of the iceberg for this device. Well it only takes ten minutes to re-label one prototype so Steve can change his mind for another week or so…

what about iawe? i wonder if it has itunes on it like a computer so you don’t have to plug it into a computer…or if its like an itouch and you do need to plug it into a computer…which it is pretty much a computer which would make it pretty pointless to me…

One subtle clue about the name that everyone’s seemed to ignore can be found on AAPL’s invitation for the upcoming event: If you unscramble the word “latest” you’ll see the word “Slate” in there. In addition, the invite has a deliberate border drawn around its perimeter, implying something in the shape of a piece of slate…or, of course, a tablet.

To be fair, the counter-argument in favor of “iPad” would be (again, ‘drawn’ from the invite) that the paintball circles seem to depict a ‘lily pad’.

My guess is that it’s going to be called iSlate, and the recent filings for iPad have been done for defensive purposes, as well as to plant some ‘disinformation’ to all the amature detectives out there.
