Steve Jobs has been working on a viable tablet since at least 1983

Wired has an article with photos of a tablet prototype that Steve Jobs was working on way back in 1983!

It looks very large and clunky by today’s standards, but think back to 1983 and what computers were.  Does anyone remember the Commodore  Pet?  Computers were huge back then.

Anyway, the point of all this is to show how long Steve Jobs and Apple has been working on creating a tablet device that doesn’t suck.  Steve is a very long range thinker.  All the stuff happening at Apple now is because of the long range strategy that he applied when he returned to Apple with the Next acquisition.  He doesn’t just look at the present market and think, “what can we make with available technology that the market will buy?”  No, he envisions something, executes it and integrates it into the Apple ecosystem and all this starts years before anyone realized Apple was moving on that particular type of item.  So, imagine what kind of cool stuff is in the prototype R&D lab at Apple today?

My personal incredulity shields me from irrational exuberance. To wit, I wait for that keynote.
