I’m sure we can all agree that two of the biggest draws for the iPad will be its multimedia functionality and gaming. On the portable gaming front we have the Nintendo DS line, Sony’s PSP, cell phones, and the iPhone/Touch as the prominent players and soon the iPad.
We have comments from Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata saying “It was a bigger iPod Touch” and “There were no surprises for me”.
John Koller, Director of Hardware and Marketing for Sony had this to say “Apple’s entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony” and “When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP”.
On the other side of things we have Andrew Stein, director of mobile platforms for Popcap Games saying “Our creative teams are really just digging in and brainstorming ideas that the power and specs of the iPad might bring to life”. Though Popcap has yet to announce anything for the iPad.
Steve Demeter, founder of Demiforce had this to say
Trism Spinoff is intended for a larger footprint device because of certain characteristics such as a higher count of trisms as well as an onscreen metagame. Trism 2 was originally going to be exclusively for iPhone and iPod Touch. However, when we realized it would be so easy to cross-compile apps for the iPad, we decided to do Trism 2 for it as well. It will look more resolute on the iPad, but other than that, it’ll be the same game.
While hard to dismiss the bigger iPod Touch comments for the time being especially with most of the launch software just being what’s already available on the Apple App Store, I’m sure that once developers start coding iPad specific games that take full advantage of the hardware especially the touch screen and motion sensors that we will start to see games that are more than your usual Adobe Flash game or your typical cell phone game.
