Microsoft Courier Details Leaked as iPad is Prepared to Launch
28 Comments | Posted by Nick Schooler in iSlate
Since last year rumors have been flying around that Microsoft (MSFT) has a “secretive team” working on the unannounced dual-screen tablet code named Courier, but more photos and details about the would-be iPad-killer have recently been leaked. The new photos look similar to the previous leaked images of Courier, and show a more refined product than was seen in photos leaked in the Fall of 2009.
According to the source, the “digital journal” Courier will weigh just over a pound (similar to the iPad, which weighs 1.6 lb) and will function as a “digital journal” eBook reader. It will be under and inch thick and each half is about 5×7″, making the whole thing about 10×7″… or almost exactly the size of the iPad. By way of a stylus and multi-touch capacity, Courier will allow users to scribble notes, manipulate clipped photos and text, and sketch images can easily be shared with other users by simply drag and drop information from their address book with their fingers via a touchscreen. It is also believed that it will have handwriting recognition. Its two screens will reportedly be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 250 processor, a ultra-low-voltage Cortex A9 ARM processor, which actually puts it ahead of the iPad in terms of processing power.
Some details of the operating system are also revealed. The tablet will run on the same base OS that Windows Mobile 7, Project Pink, and the Zune HD OS are built on, Windows CE 6. Previous leaks have revealed an operating system optimized primarily for note taking and including handwriting support. The device will center around writing and drawing, with the ability to post everything you write to a personal website with flexible sharing levels. New details show the previously hinted at e-reader player. Microsoft is building a big e-book library, so like the iPad, the Courier will serve as an e-reader, will have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and it offers a built-in camera as well.
The launch date is expected to be Q3 or Q4 of 2010 although some are saying that it will be in early 2011, but there are no pricing details as of yet, but there have been hints from Microsoft that it may be one of its more affordable pieces.
“You can’t be high-priced,” Ballmer told a group of analysts at Microsoft’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting back in June 2009. “That doesn’t get us to the high volume that we aspire to.”
Microsoft has been working on Courier for some time, and the company reportedly wants to use the device to further its long-standing tablet efforts, but Microsoft has not released any official information on the Courier, so its more concept than real at the moment.

Existence of the Microsoft Courier was confirmed on the company’s Jobs Blog http://microsoftjobsblog.com/blog/microsoft-innovation-number-one/ But the Courier part has now been removed except for a “courier” tag. Peter Kafka at All Things D, says that Microsoft’s JobsBlog said this:
“Do you already know everything about Project Natal and the Cloud? Is Blaise Aguera y Arcas’ jaw-dropping TED talk on augmented-reality Bing Maps and Photosynth last month’s news? Then check out some of the online chatter surrounding new releases of Window Phone 7 series handsets, Internet Explorer 9 and the upcoming Courier digital journal.”
Update March 23rd:
Microsoft Courier existence confirmed on the company’s JobsBlog: http://microsoftjobsblog.com/blog/microsoft-innovation-number-one/ but the Courier part has since been removed. In a post on the site by Thomas Kohnstamm which was touting Microsoft innovation, originally posted this:
“Do you already know everything about Project Natal and the Cloud? Is Blaise Aguera y Arcas’ jaw-dropping TED talk on augmented-reality Bing Maps and Photosynth last month’s news? Then check out some of the online chatter surrounding new releases of Window Phone 7 series handsets, Internet Explorer 9 and the upcoming Courier digital journal.“

Naa, the iPad will kill itself. I have yet to see anybody who really wants to get one… even the foaming-at-the-mouth apple fanboys around my work think it’s a piece of junk, and missing many key features.

Since both products still don’t exist in the wild, neither CAN kill each other.
Ipad will probably succesfull, since it’s Apple. How succesfull depends on very different factors. Apple TV is IMHO a more usefull device and it didn’t caught on.
Personally I’m very much doubting the Ipad, for a number of reasons (already mentioned allot), for myself. If the Courier works as advertised, I will buy it in a heartbeat, which would be a first for a MS product.
This mainly is, because I’ve been waiting for such a device for a number of years. To read scientific articles on it, make notes on articles, make notes on presentations.
New things, which I hadn’t thought of before, and this device makes possible. Digital labjournal, which can be shared with my PI. Gathering article clippings. Attaching article clippings directly into my labjournal. Searchable lab journal etc.

Looks really expensive to make and to own. Is it necessary to have two screens? Couldn’t the software divide one screen into two.
From a manufacturing point of view I dont see how they’ll ever get this off the ground and make this affordable for the regular consumer. Without a doubt it will be expensive.
Microsoft should target the average consumer instead of the elite tech market which this product is really aimed for. In this economy this product is going to flop.

David – Holding onto the glory days of Apple are you? Microsoft should be the least of Apple’s worries Google has decided to invade Apple’s space and Jobs is not happy about that. Apple has to keep hitting home runs to stay in the market and I think the iPad is a ground out. Sorry Apple thanks for giving true Businesses some additional insight into making their own products better, but your business model sucks and is doomed to fail. BTW does the ipod do wireless sync yet???Case and Point.

Zune who?

RE: David,
The iPod started as a good product and sold out on looks and advertising. The iPad just sucks from the outset.

After watching the “MS courier” demo in action there’s no way I’d go to the Apples’ iPad. This is what every artist wants & needs. By the way I’m an artist & all I use is Microsoft HP tablets & Autodesk Software to draw. The iPad doesn’t even come with a stylus. You’ll have to purchase a “pogo stick stylus” to even jot down notes. The MS Courier has the ipad beat. And it probably has flash support too. And multiple functions as well. The harddrive is diffenitely more than 64Gbs. The ipad will have apps but so what?
Bob | March 8, 2010 at 3:52 pm
This video even shows Flash support. Browser looks very powerful and loads pages with embedded Youtube videos very well. See as she copies part of the screen to her Journal from a Youtube embedded video.
This looks like a fantastic product and I honestly can’t wait to own one. If it is less than, say, ~500 dollars, I will buy one the day it comes out. This is the perfect device for a high school/college student who wants to be able to take notes with an electronic aid.

I like the idea of the Courier, but for now it’s vaporware. An android-based dual-screen device already exists that allows you to draw or write notes on screen, includes an e-ink screen on one side and an LCD screen on the other side, allows you to read and notate PDF files, open web links within a PDF on the e-ink side into a browser window on the LCD screen, allows you to watch videos, has a built in recorder and music player. I’m strongly considering getting one. It’s called the entourage eDGe. Check it out. I’m surprised it’s not getting more attention. The iPad seems like a cool entertainment device, but if you need to take notes forget about it.

Lets just hope this is not just vaporware.. please microsoft don’t screw with us..

For those that think iPad will fail or “a piece of junk”, you know you want one, don’t you?
I bet those that tend to bash Apple are those who really secretly love Apple products but either can’t afford it or somehow think it is cool to NOT follow the crowd.
I am not an Apple fanboy or someone who worships Apple but you have to give it to Apple for their innovation in iPod, iPhone and soon to come iPad. I do think their AppleTV sucks. I actually think Windows 7 is pretty cool and much better than the Vista.
To date, no one can compete with the iPhone yet.

For all those looking at up coming Tablets…check out Notion Ink’s Adam. While the courier seems to be focused on a slightly different market than the Adam, the Adam in my opinion (which isnt really worth anything) outsell and out perform all others.

Yeah, but Chuck Norris can kill them both!

@Joe
True, but not if Jack gets there first…
@ben
Yeah, the Adam looks like the best thing, but it missed the stylus input which I am desperately looking for. Also the infinite journal / one note looks like excellent software.
For entertainment, the Adam is a no-brainer. The only thing Ipad has against it, is that the Ipad is slightly lighter and is more “fasionable”. But the Adam has the PixeliQ screen, the camera, the USB inputs, Flash support, not restricted by the Apple store (which has shown to be highly unreliable the last few weeks). So on the Adam you could watch all the movies you want, read all the books you want, also on e-paper, are not restricted, can do video conferencing AND have a higher battery life span.
It’s amazing that a small company can develop such a machine while Apple on has the iPad.

Given their history (Microsoft) I will believe in the product once I really see it.
Some features and UI have not been seen before and it seems to exist in the digital world only and not the real world.
However, if Microsoft releases something similar then they would definitely become one of the most respected companies.
Want One | March 28, 2010 at 1:20 pm
I think the Microsoft Courier will be amazing, if it comes anywhere close to the videos that have been released so far. I’d buy one on release day. It sounds useful, unlike the iPad.
Kenny | April 1, 2010 at 3:42 pm
Awesome, Tegra 2. The iPad’s Apple A4 processor reportedly uses the much less powerful Cortex A8 reference design, whereas the Tegra 2 uses TWO Cortex A9 cores at 1GHz.
Bill Gates | April 3, 2010 at 8:29 am
The real problem for these devices is the lack of focus. The iPad is a big screened iPod touch (mp3 player with added functionality) and hasn’t many of the simplest Smartphone functions, and the Courier seems to be a double screened PDA. The only one close to a very basic netbook is the HP Slate and the Fusion Garage JooJoo.
MS | April 5, 2010 at 4:31 am
If the Microsoft Courier ships with all the reported functions it will be exactly what I need. I like the ability to use stylus for writing and also have the ability to manipulate information presented using multi-touch and flip. I would hope the camera will have a reasonable resolution. I also like the dual screen fold-up design.
LouHo | April 8, 2010 at 11:45 pm
The think the Microsoft Courier is going to have a tough time competing with the iPad App Store. Windows Mobile library isn’t nearly as large as Apple’s App Store. Being able to fold into half the size of the iPad is pretty nice though.

Just as the Zune “killed” the iPod, the courier will “kill” the iPad.
Right?
