Sony to compete directly with Apple

With Apple’s COO Tim Cook announcing that Apple is a mobile device company, seems Sony is feeling the heat to compete more directly with them.

Both Ars and Kotaku are reporting on Sony launching a service for their mobile phones to allow them to play games from Sony’s PlayStation Network.  What type of games remains to be seen as there are conflicting reports about games from Sony’s PSP-Go platform or generic PlayStation games.  This could potentially mean just allowing PSP-Go games to be played in their phones but it could also extend to the classic PSOne games available on PSN that can be downloaded to be played on a PSP.  Another possibility is that Sony may allow playing of PS3 games on this new mobile platform as they have with the PSP.

This could be an interesting move for Sony especially as it seems to be mimicking Microsoft’s move to include their XBox Live service in their Windows Mobile 7 platform.  It gets even more interesting when you consider the fact that there are Sony Ericsson phones that use Windows Mobile.

So now we have another platform moving towards a centralized app/music/video/gaming store with a unified gaming platform.  The competition is certainly heating up and we’ll just have to wait and see which platform and features prevail.
