Will the Apple iPad, along with the iPhone, be the long-awaited killer of Flash video? Several sites have been either re-thinking their reliance on Flash or designing alternate Flash-free sites. There are counter-arguments between Apple and Adobe whether Flash is a resource hog (Apple) or underperforms on Apple gear due to Apple’s refusal to provide links for hardware acceleration (Adobe). Either way, the technology of Flash is getting a bit long in the tooth. HTML 5 appears to be the future of website video. Unless, of course, the Federal Government is successful in upgrading our Internet infrastructure to 100mbs bandwidth across the nation. Then we won’t need Flash. I’m not holding my breath on that one!

1%? Don’t forget the, what, 70-80 million iPhone/iPod touch devices out there, along with large numbers of smartphones of other heritage that do Flash lite or not at all.
iPad is just the straw that risks breaking the camel’s back.

“30 million netbooks, 60 million laptops and less than 1 % of the market driving the anti flash market.. nonsense.”
Touch and iPhone users make up over 60% of MOBILE web traffic. Apple product owners tend to spend far more than average consumers on online purchases. Web sites either want eyeballs or money or both. If Flash is a barrier to entry then website developers find other ways to give iPhone/iPad owners access to their sites.

I’m with Apple – win, lose or draw. If Steve says Flash has to go, that’s good enough for me. Bye-bye, Flash.

Flash is indeed long in the tooth and may be on the way out. But I don’t think Steve Jobs should get to decide that – especially when its mainly about his own business advantage. He has effectively used “wedge” politics on the issue, by polarising the debate, but his motives are entirely self serving. I think its up to the hardware makers to provide the technology, and for the people to decide which technology they want to use. If you agree, sign my online petition http://flash4ipad.com

A petition? Seriously? Do you know anything about Apple?
Steve Jobs wouldn’t care if 30% of his own employees wanted Flash, and he’d be right not to care.
Calling Apple a “hardware maker” puts it in the same class as Dell, which it clearly isn’t. Apple is an “ecosystem maker”, which is why Flash is verboten. Apple wants to know that your web experience via Mobile Safari will be as pleasant as possible, and a closed, bug-riddled Flash plugin doesn’t fit the bill.
